A ranking can help explain visibility, but it does not tell the whole story of an SEO programme. A business also needs to know which pages attract useful interest, what those visitors do and whether the enquiries match the offer. Build reporting around decisions instead of a single headline number.
Separate visibility from business outcomes
Search Console provides search performance information, including clicks and impressions broken down by queries, pages and countries. Use it to understand how people encounter the site in Google Search. Keep that view distinct from what happens after someone arrives.
For a service business, a practical chain is visibility, visit, enquiry and qualified conversation. For a store, it may end in an order or a repeat purchase. Each step can reveal a different issue, so avoid treating them as interchangeable.
Define what counts as an enquiry
A contact button click is an expression of intent. It does not prove that an email was sent or a sales conversation happened. Document exactly what each measurement represents. On an email-based website, reconcile actual inbox enquiries with any permitted website measurement before drawing conclusions.
- Search impressions: how often a result was shown.
- Search clicks: visits initiated from the search result.
- Enquiry actions: a defined action on the website.
- Received enquiries: messages the business actually received.
- Qualified enquiries: conversations that fit an agreed customer profile.
Keep the qualification rule simple enough for the team to apply consistently. For example, a message might need a relevant service requirement and a business the agency can serve. Record why unsuitable enquiries are excluded.
Compare like with like
Review comparable periods and note changes in campaigns, seasonality, the website and the product offering. Separate branded and non-branded interest where the available data supports it. A rise in searches for the company name can have a different explanation from growth in discovery of a service page.
Look at priority page groups as well as the site total. Overall traffic can rise while an important service loses relevant enquiries. Equally, a smaller volume of better-matched visits may be more useful than a large increase in unrelated traffic.
End the report with a next action
A useful monthly review states what changed, what may explain it and what the team will check next. Label hypotheses as hypotheses. If the evidence is incomplete, identify the missing information rather than filling the gap with a confident story.
Choose one or two actions with an owner, then record the outcome in the next review. The SEO audit checklist provides a practical way to turn reporting questions into page-level work.
